Prince of Songkla University, Pattani Campus
Between 2004 and 2014, research in South Thailand focused largely on security and conflict. While this focus has since broadened, researchers working in rural Malay Muslim areas still face challenges. Though violence-related data from Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat is readily available, studies on religious geography and cultural heritage remain limited. Since 2004, important works have emerged in “Patani Studies,” yet over fifty years after Hikayat Patani, fresh empirical research is still needed.
This international symposium aims to spotlight recent developments in local heritage studies. Projects like the Maritime Asia Heritage Survey (MAHS), Silpakorn University’s cultural documentation efforts, and the MITBB Project at CSEAMS (PSU Pattani) are advancing knowledge on Malay-Muslim material culture and scholarly networks. With several researchers present in Pattani this July, PSU Pattani will host this timely event on July 9, 2025.
